Costa Rica is great, and offers a huge variety of things to do.
Kinda depends on how much time you have.
I think you need at least a week to do the country any justice.
would recommend
Arenal,,, active volcano. must see at night
Guanacaste if you just want an all inclusive beach holiday. ( good value, but not recommended as you could be on a beach anywhere)
Manual Antonio has cool national park and great beaches as well
Monteverde if you want to see rain forest/cloud forest jungle etc
San Lucas Island (Costa Rica;s Alcatraz)
white water rafting, which you can do from any of the above places Jaco. Beach town that used to have poor reputation for drugs and prostition, but which has cleaned itself up a lot. greay nitelife/party town. Dont forget to do a boat tour there to go and see the dolphins.(also available at Manual Antonio)
Then there is the carribean coast. VERY laid back and mostly quiet. but avoid Limon
